Chicken Projects

Chicken House at Melliere

Originally stocked with 1,000 chicks, about 800 have survived to maturity.  Current egg production is about 700 eggs per day. At that production rate, the project is at a break even point and is able to sustain feed, veterinarian care and a production staff.  The project is able to accumulate a small amount of money to purchase replacement chicks.

Chicken House at Jeremie

The chicken project at Jeremie has three sections.
The first would house about 50 chickens and would be used for chick production. The second would hold about 200 chickens and would be used for meat production. Chicks would be purchased and fed for 18 weeks and sold for meat consumption, The third section would house 800 chickens and would be used for egg production similar to the project at Melliere.

All three of the chicken houses were damaged or destroyed by hurricane Matthew and need to be completely rebuilt. Detailed plans and budgets are being prepared.
The plan would be for teams to come and clear the site and then rebuild the houses and populate them with new chicks, provide feed for the first year and pay staff to care for the chickens for one year. At the end of the first year the project should be self sustaining.

Chicken House at Leon

A 800 chicken project has been proposed for Leon.  Construction plans and budgets have been developed and the project is waiting on a donor.

Chicken project at Sobiere

    • More training is needed for the local farmers in caring for confined chickens. Almost all chickens in the area are free range. It was not apparent that there was a complete understanding of the difference in feed and water requirements for confined chickens compared to free range chickens. Thee seemed to be lack of understanding that the feed could be supplemented with local materials but the burden was upon the farmer to gather such material on a daily basis and that the volume of feed required was quite large.
    • The pens were small and overcrowding and fighting was apparent. The pens had no roosts or nest boxes available for the hens to get off the ground and to protect themselves from the other chickens.
    • Whatever disease occurred very quickly and the local farmers were not equipped to recognize, diagmose and treat the disease. Hence it spread very rapidly and death occurred in a few days.
    • The water supply for Sobiere is distant and difficult. The importance of continuous water supply for the chickens cannot be over emphasized.
    • Future confined chicken projects should be carefully planned with readily available water as a concern.
